Why a Tesla referral didn't attach — every case in Tesla's terms
Short answer
The most common causes: the order came before the link, the code's owner had used their 10 referrals for the year, you'd owned a qualifying Tesla product before, or the car didn't qualify. Find your case below.
Find your case
AYou ordered, then found the code
- What you see
- No referral on the order; nothing in the app.
- Why
- “Referral links cannot be applied after you place your order.”
- What you can do
- Ask Tesla, with no guarantee; or weigh cancelling and re-ordering. Both options, with their costs.

BThe code's owner had hit their yearly limit
- What you see
- Before ordering, Tesla's page said “…Referral Limit Has Been Reached” and showed no benefit on the cars.
- Why
- “If you have reached your referrer benefits limit, buyers who place their order using your referral link will not receive any buyer benefits.” The limit is 10 order referrals per calendar year.
- What you can do
- If you haven't ordered, use a different code — reload our homepage and check the page again. If you have, Tesla's terms leave no remedy. How to spot a capped code.

CYou (or your account) already owned a Tesla product
- What you see
- Order placed through the link, but no buyer benefit.
- Why
- Buyer benefits require that you “have never owned a qualifying Tesla product in the past”. Owning a Tesla-installed solar system or Powerwall counts: Tesla says an existing energy-product owner “cannot use a friend's referral link”.
- What you can do
- Look for loyalty benefits instead — Tesla offers them when an owner buys another qualifying product on the same account. If it's your partner who owns the Tesla.

DThe car didn't qualify
- What you see
- Benefit missing on a used car, a Cybertruck Dual Motor AWD, or a Model S / Model X.
- Why
- Pre-owned cars don't qualify; Cybertruck Dual Motor AWD is “eligible for loyalty benefits only”; Model S and Model X are no longer on the US qualifying list (terms updated Feb 24, 2026) or on the referral pages we checked.
- What you can do
- Nothing for that car. Which purchase paths qualify.

EThe account had used a referral before
- What you see
- Second order through a referral on the same Tesla Account; no benefit.
- Why
- Referral links “cannot be used by the same Tesla Account more than once”, and buyer benefits apply only to your first qualifying product.
- What you can do
- Nothing under the referral program; check whether loyalty benefits apply.

FThe referral got lost between opening the link and ordering
- What you see
- You did open the link, but the order shows no referral.
- Why
- Tesla's terms don't describe this case. Technically, Tesla's referral page keeps the referral in a browser cookie for 24 hours (page configuration captured Oct 2026), so a different browser, a private window, cleared cookies or ordering days later could lose it. That's our reading of the page, not Tesla's statement.
- What you can do
- Contact Tesla with a screenshot of the referral page if you have one. For your next order: open the link and order in one sitting, in one browser.

GYou opened one country's store and ordered in another
- What you see
- Link opened in, say, the US store; car ordered in the UK store.
- Why
- Tesla's terms don't address cross-store orders. Benefits differ by store (FSD trial in the US, Supercharging miles in the UK), and the program is “subject to the local laws and regulations of the registration address of the referrer and buyer”.
- What you can do
- Open the link in the store of the country where you'll register the car. Our code unit picks that store from your browser — check the store name under the code.

HThe owner says they got nothing (but you did)
- What you see
- Your benefit arrived; the referrer's didn't.
- Why
- Ohio and Virginia residents “are not eligible for referrer benefits”. Otherwise, the referrer's reward stays “pending” until the Grant Date.
- What you can do
- Nothing affects you. How the referrer's side works.

Before you contact Tesla
- Your order number and the date you placed it.
- The full referral link you used (not just the code).
- A screenshot of the referral page, if you took one.
- Which store you ordered in.
Be clear that you're asking, not claiming: Tesla's terms give it the last word on referrals (“we reserve the right to withhold benefits…”).
