Does a Tesla referral work on the six-seat Model Y L in the US?

Model Y is on the US qualifying list, and the Model Y L is a Model Y. But the first US version is a Launch Series with its own FSD (Supervised) trial, and Tesla has excluded Launch Series cars from referrals elsewhere.

What changed

Tesla's US terms list Model Y as a qualifying product and don't mention the Model Y L or trims. Tesla's US referral page showed one Model Y card with “3 mo. Full Self-Driving (Supervised)” on Oct 3, 2026, with no Model Y L card and no exclusion note. The US Model Y L on sale is a Launch Series, reported to include a 12-month FSD (Supervised) trial already, and Tesla has excluded Launch Series cars in other countries — so check your order summary before you pay.

What's happening now

The six-seat Model Y L went on sale in the US in July 2026 at $61,990, Electrek noted on Oct 6. On Sep 17, Drive Tesla Canada reported that the first US deliveries were “in the coming weeks.” Tesla had just launched Model Y L accessories, and US cars are built at Giga Texas. On Sep 22, Tesla North reported what a new order would wait:

The $61,990 Model Y L Premium All-Wheel Drive Launch Series Edition, listed at an estimated purchase price of $63,630, quotes January to February 2027

Tesla North, Sep 22, 2026

The same report says the Launch Series “adds a 12-month Full Self-Driving trial and 12 months of free Supercharging.” That package is reported, not read from a Tesla page, so treat it as reported. It matters for the referral question, as you'll see below.

What Tesla's US terms and referral page say

Tesla's US Refer and Earn terms (updated Feb 24, 2026) list the qualifying products as Model 3, Model Y, Cybertruck and Tesla-installed solar panels. The one trim the terms single out is a Cybertruck: “Cybertruck Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive is eligible for loyalty benefits only.” Nothing in them mentions the Model Y L or a Launch Series.

Tesla's US referral page, in the copy of Oct 3, 2026, showed three car cards — Model Y, Model 3, Cybertruck — each with “3 mo. Full Self-Driving (Supervised)”. The Cybertruck card carried a note, “Premium AWD & Cyberbeast,” naming the trims it covers. The Model Y card carried no note at all. There was no Model Y L card and no line leaving anything out.

So on the wording, a Model Y L is a Model Y, and a Model Y is a qualifying product. That's the case for “yes.”

The case for checking anyway

Tesla has drawn a Launch Series line on referral cards in other countries. On our copies of Tesla's referral pages for Malaysia (Sep 4, 2026) and Thailand (Sep 29, 2026), the Model Y card reads “Model Y Excl. Launch Series.” Those cards don't say which Launch Series they mean, and that's not a US rule. But it shows Tesla does carve Launch Series editions out of the referral when it wants to, and does it on the card.

There's also the overlap. If the Launch Series already comes with 12 months of FSD (Supervised), as reported, a 3-month referral trial may add nothing you'd notice. Tesla's terms don't say whether the two would run back to back, at the same time, or whether the referral applies at all on a car that already includes a trial.

Who this affects

  • First-time buyers ordering a Model Y L in the US: the referral may apply, but confirm it on the order summary before you pay the order fee.
  • People who already own a Tesla: buyer benefits are for a first qualifying Tesla only. On the same account, a Model Y L would be a loyalty purchase.
  • Owners sharing a link: if a friend orders a Model Y L through it and Tesla treats it as a Model Y, it should count toward your 10 order referrals per calendar year. The amount is shown in your Tesla app; Tesla's public terms don't state it.
  • Buyers in Ohio and Virginia: buyer benefits still apply under the US terms; referrer benefits don't.

Waiting until 2027 doesn't change the referral

A Jan–Feb 2027 delivery estimate is a long wait. It doesn't affect whether the referral is on your order — that's settled when you place it. It does push the Grant Date, when the owner's pending referral is granted, into 2027 along with your delivery.

What hasn't changed

The US benefit is still a feature trial, not money off: 3 months of Full Self-Driving (Supervised) on Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck Premium AWD and Cyberbeast, as on every copy of the US page since April 2026. A referral link still “cannot be applied after you place your order.” And the owner's limit of 10 order referrals per calendar year is unchanged.

What to do now

  1. Start from the referral link.

Configure the Model Y L from that page, in the same browser and visit.

  2. Read the order summary before paying the order fee.

A referral line means Tesla is applying it. No line means it isn't.

  3. Ask Tesla how the trials combine.

If both the included trial and the referral show, ask whether the 3 months add to the reported 12.

  4. Screenshot the card and the summary.

Keep them until well after delivery.
