Used, inventory or demo Tesla: does a referral code count?
Short answer
New inventory cars qualify; pre-owned cars don't. Tesla's terms: “You must custom order or purchase a new inventory vehicle using a referral link to qualify.” Demo cars aren't mentioned separately.

Every way of buying, side by side
| How you buy | Qualifies? | Tesla's wording |
|---|---|---|
| Custom order (you configure it) | Yes | “custom order … using a referral link” |
| New inventory car (already built, never registered to an owner) | Yes | “purchase a new inventory vehicle using a referral link” |
| Pre-owned / used car from Tesla | No | US: “Pre-owned vehicles are not qualifying products”; UK: “Certified Pre-Owned vehicles are not qualifying products” |
| Demo / ex-display car | Ask first | Not mentioned. It depends on whether Tesla sells it to you as new or as pre-owned |
| Private sale (owner to you) | No | Not a Tesla purchase; the referral is applied by Tesla when you order from Tesla |
| Cybertruck Dual Motor AWD (US) | No | “eligible for loyalty benefits only” |
Starting an inventory purchase from the referral page
Open the referral link first, then go to inventory. What you'll see depends on the store:
- UK and Ireland: the referral page showed an “Explore Inventory” link under the car cards (Sep 29 and Jul 12, 2026).
- Germany, Australia and Japan: the page showed an inventory card (Oct 1–4, 2026); in Australia that card read “Up to $350 off”.
- United States: the Oct 3, 2026 page had no inventory card (it had one in 2025). Tesla's terms still say new inventory qualifies — open the link, then reach inventory in the same visit.
Note
Tesla's referral page keeps the referral for 24 hours in a browser cookie (86,400 seconds in the page configuration we captured in October 2026). That's why “same visit, same browser” matters more than it sounds: switching phones, using a private window or coming back days later can lose it.
Demo cars: the question to ask
Tesla's terms split cars into “new inventory” (qualifies) and “pre-owned” (doesn't). A demo car could be either, depending on how Tesla lists it. Before you order, ask the seller one direct question: “Is this car being sold as new inventory or as pre-owned?” If the answer is pre-owned, a referral won't help.
Used Teslas: what you get instead
Nothing from the referral program for the purchase itself. But once that used Tesla is on your account you are an owner: you get your own referral code, and Tesla's loyalty benefits may apply when you later buy a qualifying new product on the same account.
