Can you buy a new inventory Tesla through a referral when the US page shows no inventory card?
Yes — the missing card is a page-layout choice, not a rule. Tesla's terms still name new inventory cars as qualifying.
Short answer
Yes. Tesla's US terms say you must “custom order or purchase a new inventory vehicle using a referral link,” so an in-stock new car qualifies. The US referral page simply had no inventory card on Oct 3, 2026. Open the referral link first, then go to Tesla's inventory in the same browser and the same visit.
Tesla's rule: new inventory qualifies
The question comes up because of what the US page looks like, not because of anything Tesla's rules say. The rules are clear. In the FAQ on Tesla's US Refer and Earn page, under qualifying products:
Pre-owned vehicles are not qualifying products for the Refer and Earn program. You must custom order or purchase a new inventory vehicle using a referral link to qualify for the program.
The UK page carries the same sentence, with “Certified Pre-Owned” in place of “Pre-owned”. So two kinds of purchase qualify: a car you configure yourself, and a new car that's already built and waiting in Tesla's inventory. The second still has to be a qualifying model — in the US, Model 3, Model Y or Cybertruck (not the Dual Motor AWD trim, which Tesla's terms say is “eligible for loyalty benefits only”).
What the US page showed on Oct 3, 2026
Open a US referral link today and you see a short stack of cards: Model Y, Model 3, Cybertruck, Solar Panels & Powerwall, and a Demo Drive card. There is no card or link that says “inventory”. That isn't a quirk of one owner's page. The page's own configuration, captured by the Internet Archive on Oct 3, 2026, carried the setting "showInventoryCard":false.
It wasn't always like that. Captures of the US page up to Sep 1, 2025 showed an “Explore Inventory” link under the car cards. The Dec 1, 2025 capture and every later one we read had none. Tesla didn't announce the change and didn't change the rule about inventory at the same time.
What other countries show
Other countries still put inventory on the referral page, in one of two forms: a full card, or a plain link below the model cards.
| Country | Inventory on the referral page | Capture date |
|---|---|---|
| United States | None — page setting showInventoryCard was false. An “Explore Inventory” link appeared through Sep 1, 2025 | Oct 3, 2026 |
| Canada | None in the captured page text | Sep 25, 2026 |
| United Kingdom | “Explore Inventory” link under the Model Y and Model 3 cards | Sep 29, 2026 |
| Ireland | “Explore Inventory” link | Jul 12, 2026 (older — recheck) |
| Germany | Inventory card (“Bestand erkunden”) | Oct 1, 2026 |
| Japan | Inventory card, showing ¥35,000 off | Oct 4, 2026 |
| Australia | Inventory card reading “Up to $350 Off” (A$) | Oct 4, 2026 |
| New Zealand | Inventory card reading “Up to $400 Off” (NZ$) | Jul 12, 2026 (older — recheck) |
Australia is the clearest case of inventory being treated as a first-class referral purchase: its heading reads “Gave You Up To $350 Off a New Tesla” and the inventory card carries the figure. For every country, check what the page shows on the day you order; these are dated snapshots, not promises.
Getting from the referral page to inventory
The referral travels with your browser session, not with the car. Tesla's referral page keeps it in a cookie set for 86,400 seconds — 24 hours — according to the page configuration we captured. That's an implementation detail, not a promise, so treat it as “same visit, same browser”.
Decide which browser you'll order in.
The one on the device where you'll enter payment details. Don't open the link on your phone and pay on a laptop.
Open the referral link in that browser.
Check the page heading reads “Order with name's Referral” (US and Canada) and that it isn't a “Referral Limit Has Been Reached” page.
Click into a model card.
In the US there's no inventory card, so pick the model you want to buy from inventory — Model 3, Model Y or Cybertruck.
Switch to Tesla's inventory from there.
Use Tesla's own navigation on the same site to reach new inventory for that model. Stay in the same tab or window.
Pick a car listed as new, not used.
Tesla's inventory lists new and used cars. Only new cars qualify.
Look for the referral before you pay.
See the next section. If you can't see it, stop and ask Tesla before you place the order.
Checking the referral is still with you
Tesla doesn't publish a screenshot of what a referral looks like at checkout, and the wording can change. What you're looking for is any line on the order summary or payment page that names the referral or the buyer benefit — in the US, 3 months of Full Self-Driving (Supervised) on Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck, as the US page showed on Oct 3, 2026.
- You opened the link in the same browser you're paying in, today.
- The car is listed as new, not used.
- The model is a qualifying one (not Cybertruck Dual Motor AWD in the US).
- The order summary mentions the referral or the benefit — or Tesla has confirmed in writing that it's attached.
- You've saved a screenshot of the summary before pressing the final button.
Watch out
Tesla's terms are blunt about timing: “Referral links cannot be applied after you place your order.” Every check above happens before you pay. After that, there's nothing to fix.
Demo and “used” listings in inventory
Inventory pages can include cars that have been driven — demo cars, or cars Tesla lists as used. Tesla's terms only split cars into two groups: new inventory, which qualifies, and pre-owned, which doesn't. They say nothing specific about demo cars. Ask how the car is being sold: as new inventory or as pre-owned. If it's pre-owned, the referral won't apply, whatever the mileage. Get the answer in writing before you pay.
Inventory price reductions are separate
A reduced price on an inventory car is Tesla's own pricing, not a referral benefit. The two don't replace each other, and nothing in Tesla's terms says one cancels the other.
If the order shows no referral
Most failures on inventory orders have the same causes as on custom orders. Work through them in this order:
| What happened | Why it matters | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| You opened the link on another device or browser | The referral sits in the browser that opened the link | Before paying: reopen the link in the browser you'll pay in |
| The referrer's page said “Referral Limit Has Been Reached” | Tesla: buyers using a capped owner's link “will not receive any buyer benefits” | Use a different owner's link before ordering |
| You've owned a qualifying Tesla before | Buyer benefits are for your first qualifying product only | Loyalty benefits may apply instead — ask Tesla |
| The car was sold as pre-owned | Pre-owned cars aren't qualifying products | Nothing to fix; the referral can't apply |
| You already placed the order | Links “cannot be applied after you place your order” | Ask Tesla, but expect a no |
For each of these in depth, see why a referral doesn't attach.
