Already ordered? What Tesla says about adding a referral code afterwards
Short answer
Tesla won't add it as a matter of course. Its US and UK terms say “Referral links cannot be applied after you place your order” and “cannot be credited after the order is placed.” If you haven't ordered yet, open the link first.

Text version of this diagram
Not ordered yet: open the referral link in the store of the country you are buying in, then order from that page. Ordered, not delivered: Tesla's terms say a referral cannot be applied afterwards; you can ask Tesla, knowing it has no obligation, or weigh cancelling and re-ordering after checking your order's fees. Delivered: the referral cannot be added for this car.
What Tesla's terms actually say
The rule appears in Tesla's terms three times, in slightly different words — in the buyer steps, in the referrer steps and in the terms themselves:
Referral links cannot be applied after you place your order.
Referral links cannot be credited after the order is placed and cannot be used by the same Tesla Account more than once.
The UK terms carry the same sentences. Nothing in either version describes an exception or a grace period.
You've ordered, but the car isn't delivered yet
You have three choices. None comes with a guarantee.
Ask Tesla — politely, and without expecting a yes.
Older forum and news posts describe advisors adding a referral after the fact. Those are individual reports from earlier versions of the program, not a policy, and the current terms say the opposite. If you ask, have the owner's referral link ready.
Cancel and order again through the link.
This is the only route the terms don't rule out, and it can cost you. Before cancelling, check in your own order agreement whether your order fee or deposit is refundable, whether the price or delivery date you have would still be available, and whether any incentive you're counting on depends on your current order date. Tesla's referral terms don't cover any of that.
Keep your order as it is.
Compare what you'd gain with what you'd risk. In the US store, the referral benefit on Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck is currently a 3-month Full Self-Driving (Supervised) trial, not money off.
Watch out
Don't cancel a car order to chase a referral before you've read your own order terms. Fees, prices and delivery slots are set per store and change; we don't track them, and neither do Tesla's referral terms.
The car has been delivered
Then the referral can't be added to that car. Two things are still worth knowing:
- You've now owned a qualifying Tesla product, so you won't get buyer benefits on a future purchase — but Tesla's “loyalty benefits” may apply when you buy another qualifying product on the same account.
- You now have your own referral code. Here's where to find it.
Buying soon? Avoid this next time
The fix is purely about order of events: open the referral link, check the page names the owner and shows a benefit, then configure and order from that page. Tesla's referral page keeps the referral in a browser cookie for 24 hours (86,400 seconds, in the page's own configuration as captured in October 2026) — treat that as a technical detail, not a promise, and order in one sitting.
