Model 3 delivery estimates slid into 2027 — here's what that means for a referral on your order
A referral attaches the day you order, but nothing is granted until the car arrives. With waits now measured in months, the gap between those two days matters more.

What changed
Drive Tesla Canada reported on Aug 31, 2026 that Canadian Model 3 delivery estimates had moved to December 2026–January 2027 for all three versions, and the US Model 3 RWD to January–March 2027. A referral attaches when you place the order and can't be added afterwards. The benefits themselves wait for delivery: Tesla shows the owner's reward as “pending” until the Grant Date.
What moved
The estimated delivery window is the date range Tesla shows in the design studio before you order. It's not a promise, and it moves with supply. In late August 2026 it moved a long way for one car. Drive Tesla Canada, a news site that tracks Tesla in Canada, reported these changes on Aug 31, 2026:
| Country and version | Earlier in August | After the change |
|---|---|---|
| Canada — Premium RWD and Premium AWD | September–October 2026 | December 2026–January 2027 |
| Canada — Performance | October–November 2026 | December 2026–January 2027 |
| United States — Model 3 RWD | 4–5 weeks | January–March 2027 |
These are the windows Drive Tesla Canada read from Tesla's order pages; we didn't capture those pages ourselves. The same report notes that Canada's Model 3 comes from Giga Shanghai and its Model Y from Giga Berlin, so the two cars' waits don't move together. Your own window is whatever the design studio shows on the day you look. It can be shorter or longer than these.
What's settled the day you order
The referral. Tesla's US terms say referral links “cannot be applied after you place your order” and “cannot be credited after the order is placed”. So the decision point is the order button, not delivery. A three-month wait doesn't give you three months to find a link — it gives you none, once the order is in.
That also means a long wait is no reason to delay attaching a referral. If you've decided to order, open the link first, check the referral shows in the order summary, then pay the order fee.
What waits until delivery
Everything you actually receive. Tesla's US terms say that after an order is placed, the referring owner's benefit “will appear as ‘pending’ in the Tesla app until the Grant Date”. The UK version spells the date out: pending “until the Grant Date, when you take delivery”. The US terms don't define Grant Date in those words, but the pattern is the same: nothing is granted while the car is still on a ship.
The clock that matters afterwards also starts at the Grant Date. Referrer benefits expire 12 months after it, and in the UK terms buyer benefits do too. A delivery in February 2027 starts that year in February 2027, not on your order date.
For the referring owner
For the owner who referred you, a long wait is a long stretch of “pending”. That's normal. It isn't a sign the referral failed — check the buyer's order summary for that instead.
What Tesla's terms don't cover
A wait of four or five months raises questions the terms don't answer. We'd rather say so than guess:
- The benefit changes while you wait. Tesla edits referral cards without notice — the US cards changed several times between late 2025 and spring 2026. Tesla's terms don't say whether an order keeps the benefit shown when it was placed. Keep a screenshot of the referral card and your order summary from the day you ordered.
- The program changes or ends. The terms say Refer and Earn “will not remain open indefinitely” and that they're “subject to change”. They also reserve the right to cancel benefits that aren't used during the program's timeframe once it ends. They don't say what happens to an order that's placed but not delivered at that moment.
- You change the order. Tesla's terms don't say whether switching trim, color or version keeps the referral. Ask Tesla before you change anything, and check the referral is still in the order summary afterwards.
- The referring owner sells their Tesla. The terms say the owner then stops earning referrer benefits for orders delivered after that. They don't say anything about the buyer's side.
What hasn't changed
The benefit printed on the cards hasn't moved because of the wait. Tesla's US referral page showed 3 months of Full Self-Driving (Supervised) on Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck (Premium AWD and Cyberbeast); $400 off solar panels and Powerwall on Oct 3, 2026; Canada's showed 3 months of Full Self-Driving (Supervised) on Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck on Sep 25, 2026. The rules haven't moved either: the benefit is for your first qualifying Tesla product, and an owner who has already referred 10 orders this calendar year can't pass any buyer benefit on.
What to do now
Attach the referral before you order.
Open the referral link, configure, and confirm the referral line in the order summary before paying.
Save proof.
Screenshot the referral card and your order summary on order day. On a months-long wait, that's what you'll point to if something looks wrong at delivery.
Ask before changing the order.
Tesla's terms don't say whether a changed order keeps its referral.
Check again at delivery.
Look for the benefit on your final paperwork and in the app. The referring owner should see “pending” until then.
