The “$500 off with FSD purchase” choice is gone from US and Canadian referral cards

For about three months, a Model 3 or Model Y referral offered two benefits to pick from. Archived copies of Tesla's pages show the second one disappearing in the same weeks Tesla stopped selling FSD outright.

What changed

From late 2025, Tesla's US Model 3 and Model Y referral cards read “3 mo. Full Self-Driving (Supervised) or $500 Off With FSD (Supervised) Purchase”; Canada's said $650. The cash choice was gone from Canada's page by its Feb 15, 2026 copy and from the US page by Mar 1, 2026. What's left is the 3-month FSD (Supervised) trial, still shown on Oct 3, 2026 (US) and Sep 25, 2026 (Canada).

What the card used to say, and what it says now

A referral card is the box on Tesla's referral page that names a car and the benefit you get by ordering it through that link. For a short stretch, the Model 3 and Model Y cards in North America offered a choice. These are the lines as Tesla printed them, read from dated Internet Archive copies of Tesla's own pages:

Canada3 mo. Full Self-Driving (Supervised) or $650 Off With FSD (Supervised) PurchaseFeb 11, 2026Feb 15, 20263 mo. Full Self-Driving (Supervised)

In the US, the earliest copy we hold with the two-way choice is Dec 1, 2025. Not a Tesla App reported the change on Nov 15, 2025: Model 3 and Model Y buyers could take three free months of FSD (Supervised) or “$500 ($650 CAD) off their purchase if they buy FSD”. Before that, the US cards showed the trial alone — the Sep 1, 2025 copy has no cash option.

Why it went: FSD stopped being for sale

The second choice only made sense if you could buy FSD (Supervised) outright. On Jan 15, 2026, Not a Tesla App reported Elon Musk's announcement that Tesla would stop selling FSD as a one-time purchase after Feb 14, 2026, and move to subscription only. That's a secondary report of an announcement on X; we didn't find a Tesla press release with the date.

The archived pages fit that date. Canada's card still offered $650 off on the Feb 11 copy and didn't on the Feb 15 copy — a window that contains Feb 14. The US window is wider only because the Internet Archive has no full copy of the US page between Feb 1 and Mar 1. Tesla never published a date for the card edit itself, so the honest statement is the capture window, not a day.

Dating

Our changelog records the US side of this from the Mar 1, 2026 copy. The Canadian copies narrow the timing to the middle of February.

Who this affects

  • Model 3 and Model Y buyers ordering now: there's no choice to make. The referral benefit is the 3-month FSD (Supervised) trial. A guide or video that still offers “$500 off with FSD” through a referral describes a card that hasn't existed since February 2026.
  • Anyone who ordered between late November 2025 and mid-February 2026 and picked the cash option: that choice belonged to the order you placed. Tesla's terms don't say what happens to a chosen benefit when the offer behind it changes before delivery. If it isn't on your final paperwork, ask Tesla, and quote the capture dates above.
  • Cybertruck buyers: the cash-with-FSD option was never on the Cybertruck card. In the US, Cybertruck had $1,000 off in that period and moved to the FSD trial by the Apr 1, 2026 copy.
  • Buyers outside the US and Canada: we saw this choice only on these two countries' pages. Other countries carry their own benefits, such as Supercharging distance in the UK and Germany.

What hasn't changed

The trial itself is the same three months it was before the choice appeared, and it's still printed as “3 mo. Full Self-Driving (Supervised)”. That is the whole benefit — the card names nothing else. The rules around it didn't move either: the referral has to be on the order before you place it, since Tesla's US terms say a link “cannot be applied after you place your order”; it's for your first qualifying Tesla product only; and if the owner whose link you use has already referred 10 orders this calendar year, you get no buyer benefit at all.

How to read a card that looks different

Tesla edits these cards without notice, and the same country's page can show different text a few weeks apart. Two habits keep you out of trouble. First, read the card for your exact car on the day you order, not a screenshot someone posted months ago. Second, ignore financing lines printed on the same card — rates like “1.99% APR Available” are Tesla's general finance offers, not part of the referral. The referral benefit is the line under the model name, and it's the line that should show up again in your order summary.

What to do now

  1. Expect the trial, not cash.

In the US and Canada, the Model 3 and Model Y referral benefit is 3 months of FSD (Supervised).

  2. Open the referral page before you configure.

Check your model's card on the day you order; that's the version that counts.

  3. Check the order summary before paying.

The referral has to be there before the order is placed. It can't be added afterwards.

  4. Ordered with the cash choice before mid-February 2026?

Look for it on your final invoice. If it's missing, ask Tesla and give the capture dates on this page.
