Someone at home already owns a Tesla — can you still use a referral code?
Tesla's terms talk about Tesla Accounts, not households. That changes the answer.
Short answer
Tesla's terms tie buyer benefits to the buyer and their Tesla Account: you must be buying your first qualifying Tesla product and have never owned one. They don't mention households. Buying on the existing owner's account means loyalty benefits, not buyer benefits.
What the terms say, and don't
- Buyer benefits: “you must purchase a qualifying Tesla product through a friend's referral link and have never owned a qualifying Tesla product in the past.”
- Loyalty benefits: “available if you currently own a qualifying Tesla product and you are purchasing another qualifying Tesla product using the same Tesla Account.”
- A referral link “cannot be used by the same Tesla Account more than once.”
- Benefits are “non-transferable” and “only primary account holders can redeem benefits.”
- Nothing about spouses, partners, family members or shared addresses.
Three common situations
| Situation | Which benefit Tesla's terms point to | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You order on your own new Tesla Account, and you've never owned a qualifying Tesla product | Buyer benefit, through someone's referral link | You meet the “never owned” condition; the household isn't mentioned |
| You order on your partner's existing Tesla Account | Loyalty benefit (if available), not buyer benefit | That account already owns a qualifying product |
| You personally owned a Tesla before — even years ago | No buyer benefit | “have never owned a qualifying Tesla product in the past” |
Watch out
Tesla also says it may “withhold benefits where we believe customers are acting in bad faith or otherwise acting contrary to the intent of this program.” Setting up a second account just to collect a buyer benefit on a car the existing owner is really buying is the kind of thing that clause exists for. Order on the account of the person who will actually own the car.
Can your partner refer you?
The terms don't forbid it: the program exists for owners “sharing their passion for Tesla products with their friends and family.” If your partner owns a qualifying Tesla product and you're a first-time buyer on your own account, their code is a natural one to use. Their reward counts toward their 10 referrals for the calendar year.
Solar or Powerwall at home?
Tesla's FAQ: “If you already own a qualifying Tesla energy product as an existing customer, you cannot use a friend's referral link.” If the solar system is on your Tesla Account, you're an existing customer. If it's on someone else's, the terms point back to the account-based reading above.
