You own a Powerwall 2 and want to add a Powerwall 3. Can you use a friend's referral link?
Probably not for a buyer benefit. Tesla's US terms treat a Powerwall owner as an existing customer, and existing energy owners can't use a friend's link.

What changed
Probably not. Tesla North reported on Sep 23, 2026 that Tesla now lets Powerwall 2 owners in North America and Australia add a 13.5 kWh Powerwall 3. But Tesla's US terms list Powerwall among the products that mean you've “already joined the Tesla community,” and say an existing owner of a qualifying energy product “cannot use a friend's referral link.” Ask Tesla about loyalty benefits instead.
What happened
Tesla North reported on Sep 23, 2026 that Tesla had opened a capacity upgrade to existing customers in North America and Australia: households with a Powerwall 2 can now add a Powerwall 3, the current 13.5 kWh unit, alongside it. Tesla announced it in a post on Tuesday, Sep 22, the report says. Until then, a Powerwall 2 owner could only add another second-generation unit.
The report leaves cost, installation work and permits to installers and their customers. So do we.
Why a friend's link likely doesn't help
Tesla's US Refer and Earn page answers a question that sounds like this case.
The FAQ question is “I have solar panels, Solar Roof and/or Powerwall. Can I use my friend's referral link to receive referrer benefits for a Tesla vehicle?” Tesla's answer:
If you already own a qualifying Tesla energy product as an existing customer, you cannot use a friend's referral link. As a loyal customer, you can earn loyalty benefits by purchasing qualifying Tesla products in the Tesla app.
Two more lines on the same page point the same way. Under “How can I check if I am an existing customer,” Powerwall is on the list of products that mean “you have already joined the Tesla community.” And buyer benefits are “only available when purchasing your first qualifying Tesla product.” A Powerwall 3 added to a Powerwall 2 home isn't anyone's first Tesla product.
The wrinkle: Powerwall isn't on the qualifying list
Tesla's US terms name only one qualifying energy product — “solar panels,” installed by Tesla. Powerwall isn't on that list, yet the US referral page card on our Oct 3, 2026 capture showed $400 off “Solar Panels & Powerwall.” Tesla doesn't reconcile the two. For a Powerwall owner, that cuts both ways: it's unclear whether your Powerwall 2 counts as a “qualifying” energy product for the rule above, and equally unclear whether a Powerwall 3 purchase counts as a qualifying purchase for loyalty. Ask Tesla before you order.
Canada and Australia
The expansion is available in both, as reported. The referral side is thinner there. On our capture of Tesla's Canadian referral page dated Sep 25, 2026, the cards were Model Y, Model 3, Cybertruck and a demo drive — no energy card. Our capture of Tesla's Australian referral page dated Oct 4, 2026 showed Model Y and Model 3 only. So on the pages we read, there was no energy referral benefit to claim in either country.
If someone quotes a “referral discount”
Powerwall upgrades often go through installers. If a quote mentions a referral discount, ask whose it is. Tesla's Refer and Earn program is applied by Tesla, through a link on tesla.com, before you order. An installer's own referral scheme is a separate arrangement, on that installer's terms.
Who this affects
- Powerwall 2 owners adding a Powerwall 3: don't plan around a buyer benefit; ask Tesla about loyalty.
- Your household's next car: Tesla's terms tie benefits to a Tesla Account. Whether a home battery on one account affects a car bought on another, the terms don't say; ask first.
- First-time buyers with no Tesla product: nothing changes for you.
What to ask Tesla
- Does my Powerwall 2 make me an existing customer for the Refer and Earn program?
- Does adding a Powerwall 3 count as a qualifying purchase for loyalty benefits on my Tesla Account?
- If the Powerwall 3 is installed by a certified installer rather than Tesla, does that change the answer?
- Does my Powerwall affect a car bought later on a different Tesla Account in my household?
Ask before you sign, in writing, and keep the reply. Tesla's terms put the burden on you if a benefit is disputed later.
What hasn't changed
The rules for existing energy owners, the solar-panel qualifying product, and car referrals. A referral link still “cannot be applied after you place your order.”
What to do now
Don't expect a buyer benefit on the expansion.
Tesla's US terms treat Powerwall owners as existing customers.
Ask Tesla about loyalty benefits.
Ask whether a Powerwall 3 added to a Powerwall 2 counts as a qualifying purchase, and keep the reply.
Check who offers any “referral discount”.
Tesla's program, or the installer's own.
