Loyalty benefits or buyer benefits: which one do you get?

Tesla's program has two benefits for people who buy, and they're aimed at two different people. Your ownership history picks one for you.

Short answer

Buyer benefits are for your first qualifying Tesla product, ordered through a friend's referral link. Loyalty benefits are for owners who buy another qualifying product on the same Tesla Account, up to 10 times. Tesla's terms describe them as separate tracks, and a first-time buyer can't also be a returning one.

Two benefits, two kinds of buyer

Tesla's Refer and Earn program gives out three kinds of benefit. Referrer benefits go to the owner who shares a link. The other two go to people who buy, and they split buyers into two groups:

Which Tesla referral-program benefit applies to your order Decision tree. Question one: have you ever owned a qualifying Tesla product? Have you ever owned a qualifying Tesla product? If no: buyer benefits — open a friend's referral link before you order; once only. If yes: is a qualifying product on the Tesla Account you're ordering on now? If yes: loyalty benefits — same account, no link needed, up to 10 times. If no, or you sold it: ask Tesla, because the terms word this two ways.

Buyer benefits: first product, through a link

The buyer track is narrow by design. Tesla's page says it twice: “Buyer benefits are only available when purchasing your first qualifying Tesla product. Once you've made your first purchase, you no longer qualify for buyer benefits, but you may still be able to earn referrer and loyalty benefits.”

Two things trip people up. The link has to come first — “Referral links cannot be applied after you place your order.” And the code's owner must still have room under their cap: “If you have reached your referrer benefits limit, buyers who place their order using your referral link will not receive any buyer benefits.” In the US, qualifying products today are Model 3, Model Y, Cybertruck and Tesla-installed solar panels.

Loyalty benefits: same account, up to 10 times

Loyalty is the track for returning customers. Tesla's wording: loyalty benefits “are available if you currently own a qualifying Tesla product and you are purchasing another qualifying Tesla product using the same Tesla Account.” The terms cap it at “10 times over the life of the account.”

Two practical points follow. The second purchase has to go on the account that holds the first one — buying on a new or a partner's account breaks the link between them. And the terms don't publish what loyalty benefits are; Tesla points to the Tesla app. We don't print a loyalty figure because no public Tesla page we captured states one.

“Currently own” vs “previously owned”: the wording gap

Tesla's US page describes loyalty eligibility two ways. The main section says you must “currently own a qualifying Tesla product.” The FAQ note on qualifying products says “Loyalty benefits are only available if you currently or have previously owned a qualifying Tesla product.” The UK page has the same pair.

For most owners it makes no difference — they still have the car. It matters if you sold or traded in your last Tesla before ordering the next one. One sentence says you're out; the other says you're in. Tesla doesn't reconcile them. If that's your case, ask Tesla before you order, and keep the answer.

Solar first, car second

If your first Tesla product was Tesla-installed solar, the buyer benefit went with it, and your car is a loyalty purchase. Tesla says an existing owner of a qualifying energy product “cannot use a friend's referral link” and points to loyalty benefits instead.

Can you get both on one order?

Not by the terms as written. The buyer track requires that you've never owned a qualifying product; the loyalty track requires that you own one. You can't be both at the moment you order. And there's no wording that lets a referral link add a buyer benefit on top of loyalty for a repeat buyer.

The two tracks do connect over time. Your first car, bought through a link, gets the buyer benefit. That car, on your account, makes your second car a loyalty purchase. And from the day the first one is on your account, you have your own referral link to share.

Cybertruck Dual Motor AWD: loyalty only

One trim sits in an odd spot in the US. Tesla's terms say: “Cybertruck Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive is eligible for loyalty benefits only and cannot be purchased to earn buyer or referrer benefits through the Refer and Earn program.” So a first-time buyer gets nothing from the referral program on that trim, while an existing owner buying it on the same account can get loyalty benefits. On Oct 3, 2026, the Cybertruck card on Tesla's US referral page carried the note “Premium AWD & Cyberbeast.”

Where loyalty benefits show

Tesla's support page says to “learn more about how loyalty benefits work and how to access the benefits in the Tesla app.” It doesn't describe the screen in its public text. Since the app is where Tesla puts it, check the app before you order a second car, and note what it shows. Benefits added as Tesla Credits show up in the app under menu → your name → “Wallet”, on the “Tesla Credits” card, with an expiry date.

Decision tree, in words

  1. Have you ever owned a qualifying Tesla product?

No → you're on the buyer track. Open a friend's referral link, check the page shows a benefit for your car, then order in the same visit.

  2. Yes — is a qualifying product on the account you'll order on, right now?

Yes → you're on the loyalty track. Order on that same account. No referral link is needed for loyalty.

  3. You owned one but sold it, or it's on another account?

Ask Tesla. The “currently own” and “previously owned” wordings point different ways.

  4. Buying a US Cybertruck Dual Motor AWD?

Loyalty only. A first-time buyer gets no referral benefit on that trim.
