Denmark's 2027 registration tax: does a Tesla referral change what you pay?

The tax follows the day the car is registered. The Danish referral benefit is Supercharging kilometers, so it neither lowers the price nor moves your registration date.

What changed

No. On Sep 28, 2026, Mobility Denmark said the government's finance bill proposal would let the registration-tax threshold for EVs fall from about DKK 419,000 to DKK 366,000 for cars registered after Jan 1, 2027 — almost DKK 28,000 more for a Model Y Long Range AWD on FDM's calculation. It's still a proposal. Tesla's Danish referral page showed 1,000 km of free Supercharging on our Aug 29, 2026 capture: no money off, so it doesn't offset the tax.

What's proposed

Denmark's government doesn't want to extend the current registration-tax terms for electric cars. That's the reading of Mobility Denmark, the trade body for car makers, importers and leasing companies, in a press release on Sep 28, 2026, responding to the government's finance bill proposal (finanslovsudspil).

Under the proposal, the price level at which an electric car starts paying registration tax would fall from about DKK 419,000 to DKK 366,000. Mobility Denmark quotes FDM's calculations: about DKK 10,300 more tax on a VW ID.4 Style, and “knap 28.000 kroner” — almost DKK 28,000 — more on a Tesla Model Y Long Range with all-wheel drive. Mobility Denmark wants the increase taken out of the bill.

It isn't law. It's a finance bill proposal still to be negotiated. FDM, the Danish motorists' association, wrote on May 27, 2026 that the increase was not cancelled but might be postponed again, and that importers can adjust prices, equipment and campaigns. Treat the figures as estimates of a proposal, not a price list.

The date that matters is registration

FDM spells out the one rule a buyer can act on (our translation): the tax “depends on when the car is registered, not on when the purchase contract is signed.” A car ordered in November but registered in January would fall under the 2027 rules, if they pass. Some cars have months of delivery time, FDM notes, so delivery after the new year can affect the final price.

How to keep an eye on the registration date

Tesla's support page on taking delivery says that once your order is placed, “you can view the estimated delivery window at any time from the Tesla app,” and that timing depends on production, logistics and how quickly you complete your delivery tasks. An estimate isn't a registration date. If the year matters to you, ask Tesla before ordering what a realistic date is for the car you want, and get the answer in writing.

FDM's figures are worked out for cars at particular prices. What you'd pay depends on your own car's price at registration, and FDM points out that importers can change prices, so the Model Y figure is an estimate, not a quote.

What the Danish referral gives

A referral link opens Tesla's referral page for your country. On our Aug 29, 2026 capture of Tesla's Danish referral page, the Model 3 and Model Y cards both showed 1,000 km of free Supercharging.

Two different things
Registration tax (proposal)Danish referral benefit
What it isA tax on the car's price, paid at registration1,000 km of free Supercharging on Model 3 and Model Y
What decides itThe registration date and the car's priceOrdering through a referral link as a first-time buyer
Does one change the other?NoNo — it isn't money off and doesn't move your delivery

So a referral doesn't offset the tax and doesn't make it smaller. It also doesn't make your car arrive sooner. Kilometers of Supercharging are added after delivery; they don't change the price the tax is worked out on.

Who this affects

  • Danish buyers whose delivery could slip past Dec 31: the registration date may matter more than anything else about the order.
  • Buyers of cheaper electric cars: FDM says cars at or under about DKK 300,000 aren't hit in 2027.
  • First-time Tesla buyers in Denmark: the referral's 1,000 km is still there whichever year you register.

Watch out

Don't wait to order because you're hoping for a “better” referral, and don't order first and add the link later. Tesla's terms say a referral link “cannot be applied after you place your order.” If the timing of the tax matters to you, the order date — and the delivery date it leads to — is the thing to manage.

What hasn't changed

The Danish referral benefit on our captures, and how it's granted: open the link before you configure, order from that page, first qualifying Tesla only. The tax rules for 2026 registrations, too — the proposal is about cars registered from Jan 1, 2027.

What to do now

  1. Ask Tesla for a realistic delivery date before ordering.

If you need to register in 2026, say so, and ask whether an inventory car would get there sooner.

  2. Watch the finance bill.

The threshold change is a proposal; check where negotiations end before you rely on any figure.

  3. Open the referral link first.

If it's your first Tesla, the link has to be on the order; it gives 1,000 km on our latest copy.

  4. Read the card for your car.
