Do the FSD months from a Tesla referral count toward Lemonade's FSD insurance discount?

Lemonade prices FSD miles lower than manual ones and now includes older HW3 cars. Neither Lemonade nor Tesla says how a referral's trial months are treated — here's the mechanism.

What changed

Probably while the FSD months are active, but no one has said so. Lemonade prices FSD miles below manual miles — 50% off for HW4 cars on FSD v14.2 or later and, since Oct 8, 2026, 30% off for HW3 cars on FSD v14 Lite in Arizona, Colorado and Tennessee — and reads which miles were on FSD through Tesla's Fleet API. Neither report says anything about referral trials. Ask Lemonade before you count on it.

What changed

Lemonade, a US insurer, extended its FSD discount to Teslas with the older Hardware 3 (HW3) computer. Drive Tesla Canada reported on Oct 8, 2026 that “Lemonade takes 30% off every mile an HW3 Tesla drives on FSD v14 Lite,” and that “only drivers in Arizona, Colorado and Tennessee qualify” for now. Owners of newer HW4 cars running FSD v14.2 or later get a larger 50% discount on FSD miles.

Not a Tesla App reported the same day that, for HW3, the car must be “a 2019 or newer model running FSD v14 Lite on software version 2026.20.6.11 or higher,” that there's “no minimum FSD usage requirement,” and that existing Lemonade customers get the discount automatically at renewal. It adds that Lemonade's FSD insurance is also live in Oregon, Indiana and Missouri, where the HW3 rate hasn't arrived yet.

How the discount works

This is the part that matters for a referral. Lemonade's policy is pay-per-mile, and it splits your miles in two. In Drive Tesla Canada's words, “Using Tesla's Fleet API, and with the owner's permission, the insurer tracks how many miles are driven manually versus with FSD activated. Each category is then priced separately.” Both reports stress that the 30% and 50% apply only to FSD miles, not to the whole premium.

So the discount follows miles driven with FSD engaged, as Tesla's data reports them. Neither report says Lemonade checks whether you bought FSD, subscribe to it, or have it on a trial.

Where the referral comes in

Tesla's US referral page showed “3 mo. Full Self-Driving (Supervised)” on the Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck cards on our Oct 3, 2026 capture (Cybertruck: Premium AWD and Cyberbeast). That's the buyer benefit a first-time buyer gets by ordering through a referral link.

Read together, the mechanism suggests that miles driven on FSD during the referral months would be recorded as FSD miles like any others. That's an inference, not a statement from Lemonade. Ask before you choose a policy because of it.

Who this affects

  • First-time US buyers ordering through a referral who live in Arizona, Colorado or Tennessee and are weighing Lemonade.
  • HW4 car owners in the other states where Lemonade's FSD insurance is live — the 50% rate was already available; nothing about it changed on Oct 8.
  • Everyone else: Lemonade's FSD pricing isn't offered in your state yet, according to these reports.

Not part of the referral

Lemonade is a third party. It isn't part of Tesla's referral program, and the referral terms say nothing about insurance. Tesla offers its own insurance too; Not a Tesla App says Tesla Insurance gives FSD discounts to owners who drive at least half their miles on FSD. Compare the actual quotes, not the percentages.

What hasn't changed

The referral benefit itself. The US buyer benefit is still 3 months of Full Self-Driving (Supervised), and nothing more — it isn't an insurance discount and Tesla doesn't present it as one. The link still has to be open before you place your order, and the benefit is still for your first qualifying Tesla product. We print no savings figure here: what you'd save depends on your rate, your miles and how much you drive on FSD, and only a quote can tell you.

What to do now

  1. Ask Lemonade one question.

“Are FSD miles driven during a Tesla referral trial counted at the FSD rate?” Keep the answer.

  2. Check your car's hardware and software.

HW3 needs a 2019 or newer car on FSD v14 Lite and software 2026.20.6.11 or later; HW4 needs FSD v14.2 or later.

  3. Note when the referral months end.

After that, FSD miles stop unless you keep FSD on another way.

  4. Haven't ordered yet?

Open a referral link before you configure, so the 3 months are on the order.
