Does a Tesla referral lower the catalogue value your Dutch bijtelling is based on?

Bijtelling is a percentage of the car's catalogue value. The Dutch referral benefit is free Supercharging, so it never touches the price that percentage is taken from.

What changed

No. Lease company Athlon's summary of the 2027 tax plan says bijtelling on new electric cars rises from 18% to 20% on the part of the catalogue value up to €30,000, with 22% above it. Tesla's Dutch referral page showed 1,000 km of free Supercharging on Model 3 and Model Y on our Aug 21, 2026 capture — a charging credit, not a reduction in the car's price. A referral doesn't change the catalogue value.

What changed

Bijtelling is the amount a Dutch employee adds to taxable income for private use of a company or lease car. It's a percentage of the car's catalogue value (cataloguswaarde). The 2027 tax plan, presented with the Miljoenennota on Tuesday, Sep 15, 2026, keeps shrinking the advantage for electric cars.

Athlon, a lease company, summarizes it like this (our translation from Dutch): in 2027, “for the part of the catalogue value up to €30,000, the bijtelling rises from 18% to 20%. Above this limit, 22% continues to apply.” From 2028, new electric cars get one rate of 22% on the full catalogue value. Athlon marks the 2027 bijtelling step as “aangenomen” — adopted — while flagging that, with a minority cabinet, some other plans in the package may still change.

What the Dutch referral gives

A referral link opens Tesla's referral page for your country. On our Aug 21, 2026 capture of Tesla's Dutch referral page, the Model 3 and Model Y cards both showed 1,000 km of free Supercharging. No card showed money off the price.

That answers the question. Bijtelling is calculated on the catalogue value of the car. A Supercharging credit is added to your Tesla Account after delivery; it doesn't change what the car costs or how it's listed. So a referral doesn't make the catalogue value lower, and it doesn't make your bijtelling lower.

Not tax advice

Whether free Supercharging kilometers matter for anything else on your tax return, or for your lease contract, isn't a referral question and we don't answer it. Ask your employer or lease company — they set up the car and the bijtelling.

Who this affects

  • Dutch business drivers choosing a Tesla through an employer or lease company: the referral won't move your bijtelling, either way.
  • Private buyers in the Netherlands: bijtelling doesn't apply to you at all; the 1,000 km is simply yours to use.
  • Lease orders in general: Tesla's referral terms speak of a “purchase” and don't mention leases. If the lease company places the order, ask whether a referral can be on it, and on whose Tesla Account the kilometers would land.

That last point is worth more than the tax question. Tesla's terms say “only primary account holders can redeem benefits.” If the car is ordered and registered by a lease company, ask before you order where the Supercharging credit would go.

Questions to settle before a lease order

If a lease company or employer is involved, the useful questions are about the order, not the tax:

  • Does the lease company allow you to order through a referral link at all, and who places the order?
  • On whose Tesla Account will the car sit? The Supercharging credit lands on the account the order is tied to.
  • Are you a first-time buyer on that account? Tesla's terms give the buyer benefit only to someone who has “never owned a qualifying Tesla product in the past.”
  • When do the kilometers expire? Tesla's UK terms say Supercharging credits expire 12 months after the Grant Date; we haven't read the Dutch terms, so check the “Charging” screen in the app after delivery.

What hasn't changed

The Dutch referral benefit on our captures is kilometers. Your bijtelling still depends on your car's catalogue value and on which year's rate applies to your car. Athlon describes the rates for new cars in 2027 and 2028; which one applies to yours is a question for your lease company or employer. The referral rules haven't moved either: the link has to be open before the order is placed, and the benefit is for a first qualifying Tesla only.

If you're in Belgium, Luxembourg or elsewhere in Europe, your tax rules are different, and so may be the referral card. Check Tesla's referral page for your own country.

What to do now

  1. Don't pick a referral to lower bijtelling.

The Dutch referral is 1,000 km of Supercharging; it doesn't change the catalogue value.

  2. Ask your lease company two things.

Which year's bijtelling rate applies to your car, and whether a referral can be on an order they place.

  3. Check the Dutch card before you order.

Our latest copy is from Aug 21, 2026. Read the Model 3 or Model Y card on Tesla's page first.

  4. Buying privately?

Open a referral link before you configure; bijtelling isn't your concern.
