Can you get Canada's EVAP rebate and a Tesla referral benefit on the same Model Y?
One is a federal rebate on the price. The other is a Tesla benefit tied to the referral link. Nothing we've read says one blocks the other — but they work on different rules.

What changed
They're different things, from different sources. The federal EVAP rebate is up to $5,000 on eligible battery EVs, and Drive Tesla Canada reported on Sep 28, 2026 that the 2026 Model Y RWD is the only eligible Tesla. Tesla's referral benefit in Canada was 3 months of Full Self-Driving (Supervised) on our Sep 25, 2026 capture — not money off. Nothing in Tesla's referral terms mentions government rebates either way.
What happened
Canada's Electric Vehicle Affordability Program (EVAP) is a federal rebate. Drive Tesla Canada reported in May 2026 that eligible purchases began on Feb 16, 2026, with rebates of up to $5,000 for eligible battery EVs and $2,500 for qualifying plug-in hybrids.
On Sep 28, 2026, the same outlet analysed Transport Canada's open data for August. Its findings for Tesla buyers:
- Only one Tesla is eligible: the 2026 Model Y RWD. The report says Model 3, Model S, Model X and Cybertruck don't qualify.
- All 1,945 Tesla claims so far were for that car.
- Quebec buyers can also get the province's $2,000 rebate on it, per the report.
- Transport Canada reported $2 billion left in the fund as of Sep 1, 2026.
The May report adds why the Model 3 is out even though its price is low: the Model 3 Premium RWD comes from Giga Shanghai, and the program requires a free-trade agreement with the country of origin, which Canada doesn't have with China. The Model Y RWD comes from Giga Berlin.
Two benefits, two sources
| Federal EVAP rebate | Tesla referral benefit | |
|---|---|---|
| Who sets it | The Government of Canada | Tesla |
| What it is | Up to $5,000 on an eligible battery EV (as reported) | 3 months of Full Self-Driving (Supervised) on Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck (our capture, Sep 25, 2026) |
| Which Tesla | 2026 Model Y RWD only (as reported Sep 28, 2026) | Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck cards on the referral page |
| What it depends on | The program's own rules | Ordering through a referral link as a first-time buyer, before you place the order |
Because the referral benefit is FSD time rather than money off, it doesn't change the car's price. We haven't seen how a rebate is shown on a Tesla order in Canada, and Tesla's referral terms say nothing about government incentives. So the honest answer is: nothing we've read says one excludes the other, and they don't touch the same number.
Rebate rules
We don't print EVAP's price limits or claim process here. Check the Government of Canada's program page and the price details Tesla shows on your order before final payment.
An order sequence that keeps both in view
Check you're a first-time buyer.
The buyer benefit needs a buyer who has “never owned a qualifying Tesla product in the past.”
Check the car is the eligible one.
As reported, the 2026 Model Y RWD is the only EVAP-eligible Tesla. A different trim may still carry the referral, but not the rebate.
Open the referral link, then configure and order.
In the same visit. The link can't be added later.
Before final payment, read the price details.
Look for the rebate where you expect it, and ask Tesla if it isn't there.
Who this affects
- First-time buyers choosing a 2026 Model Y RWD: the car where both questions arise. Open the referral link before you configure.
- Model 3 buyers: no EVAP rebate on the current car, as reported; the referral benefit is still on the Model 3 card.
- Existing Tesla owners: no buyer benefit through anyone's link. Loyalty benefits on the same Tesla Account are Tesla's route for you; EVAP is a separate question.
What hasn't changed
Tesla's referral rules. A link “cannot be applied after you place your order” — so if you were waiting to see whether the rebate applies, don't order first and add the link later. The buyer benefit is only for your first qualifying Tesla product. And an owner who has reached their 10 order referrals for the calendar year can't pass on a buyer benefit; Tesla says buyers using that link “will not receive any buyer benefits.”
Leasing is the other open point. The Sep 28 report notes Tesla claims include some leases. Tesla's referral terms say “purchase” and never “lease,” so if you plan to lease, ask Tesla whether the referral benefit applies before you sign.
What to do now
Confirm the trim.
As reported, only the 2026 Model Y RWD is EVAP-eligible among Teslas.
Open the referral link first.
Check the Model Y card on Tesla's Canadian referral page, then configure and order in the same visit.
Check the rebate on your order.
Before final payment, look at the price details Tesla shows; ask your Tesla Advisor if the rebate isn't where you expect.
Leasing?
Ask Tesla whether the referral benefit applies to a lease before you sign.
