Booking a Tesla demo drive through a referral link: who gets what
A referred demo drive can earn the owner something. It doesn't, by itself, give you a buyer benefit.
Short answer
Under Tesla's US terms, the code's owner can earn referrer benefits when you complete your first demo drive through their link — up to 30 over their account's life. Tesla's terms state no buyer benefit for a demo drive; your benefit comes only when you order through the link.
Where the demo-drive option shows up
On Tesla's US referral page, a “Demo Drive” card has sat under the car cards since at least December 2025, labeled “Experience Full Self-Driving (Supervised)”. The Canadian referral page showed it too (Sep 25, 2026). The UK, Irish and German pages we checked didn't, and the Australian page's configuration had the card switched off.
What each side gets
| The code's owner | You | |
|---|---|---|
| Book and complete a first demo drive through the link | Referrer benefit (counts toward 30 per account lifetime) | No buyer benefit stated in the terms |
| Later order your first qualifying Tesla through the link | Referrer benefit (counts toward 10 per calendar year) | Buyer benefit for your store |
| Qualifying cars for demo drives | Model 3, Model Y, Cybertruck | — |
Tesla customers can also refer up to 30 demo drive referrals over the life of the account and the demo drive must be scheduled using the customer's referral link.
The part people get wrong
A demo drive booked through a referral link doesn't “lock in” the referral for a later order. Tesla's terms say the order “must be placed using the customer's referral link”, and Tesla's referral page only remembers the referral in your browser for 24 hours (page configuration captured October 2026). So after your drive:
Open the referral link again before you configure.
Same code or another — check the page still names the owner and shows your benefit.
Order from that page, in the same visit.
Referral links can't be added after the order is placed.
Note
This applies to the US terms. Other stores' terms may not include demo-drive referrals at all — the UK terms we read don't mention them.
