A friend ordered with your referral link, and you got nothing. Why?

Work down this list in order. The first few causes are the common ones, and some of them aren't problems at all.

Short answer

First check whether it's simply “pending”: Tesla shows the referrer's benefit as pending until the Grant Date, which the UK terms tie to delivery. If nothing shows at all, the causes Tesla's terms name are your 10-a-year cap, living in Ohio or Virginia, a friend who'd owned a Tesla before, a car that doesn't qualify, no qualifying product on your account, or an order placed before the link.

First: is it just “pending”?

Start here, because it's the most common case and it isn't a failure. Tesla's terms say that after your friend places an order, “your benefit will appear as ‘pending’ in the Tesla app until the Grant Date.” The UK FAQ adds when that is: “until the Grant Date, when you take delivery” — “you” being the buyer. The US terms don't define the Grant Date.

So a friend who ordered last week and takes delivery in two months will leave you looking at “pending” for two months. That's the system working. Open the Tesla app, tap the menu in the top-right, go to “Refer and Earn” and look for the entry. If it's there and pending, wait for delivery.

If nothing appears at all — no pending entry — keep going down this list.

You'd reached 10 referrals this year

Tesla caps order referrals at “10 order referrals per calendar year.” The eleventh order through your link earns you nothing. Worse, it earns your friend nothing too: “If you have reached your referrer benefits limit, buyers who place their order using your referral link will not receive any buyer benefits.” Count the orders that came through your link since January 1. If you're at 10, that's the answer. The count resets with the calendar year.

US demo-drive referrals are counted separately — “up to 30 demo drive referrals over the life of the account” — and don't use up the 10 order referrals.

You live in Ohio or Virginia

Tesla's US terms carve out two states: “Ohio and Virginia residents are able to qualify for buyer and loyalty benefits, but are not eligible for referrer benefits.” If your registration address is in either state, your friend can still get their buyer benefit through your link, but nothing comes to you. The program is “subject to the local laws and regulations of the registration address of the referrer and buyer, respectively,” so it's your address that counts here, not your friend's.

Your friend wasn't a first-time buyer

You earn when a friend buys “their first qualifying Tesla product through your referral link.” If your friend had owned a qualifying Tesla product before, they're a loyalty buyer, not a referral buyer, and there's no referral to credit. This includes Tesla-installed solar: Tesla says an existing owner of a qualifying energy product “cannot use a friend's referral link.” Also, a link “cannot be used by the same Tesla Account more than once” — if your friend's account had used a referral before, this order doesn't count again.

The car didn't qualify

Your friend had to “custom order or purchase a new inventory vehicle using a referral link.” A used Tesla bought from Tesla's pre-owned stock doesn't count, even if they opened your link first.

No qualifying product on your account any more

This one surprises people who've just sold their car. Tesla's terms: “Once you transfer or remove all qualifying products from your account, your referral link will no longer be valid, and you will not receive referrer benefits when your friend orders and takes delivery of their first Tesla vehicle… until you take delivery of another qualifying Tesla vehicle.”

Note the timing. It's when your friend orders and takes delivery that matters. If you sold your Tesla between their order and their delivery, the wording suggests the referral could fall through. And remember the US list changed: if your only car is a Model S or X, it isn't on today's US qualifying list. Tesla's terms don't say how that affects an existing S or X owner's link, so ask.

The order was placed before the link

“Referral links cannot be applied after the order has been placed.” If your friend ordered first and then remembered your link, nothing will ever show for you. The same goes for a friend who opened the link on one device and ordered on another, or came back much later. The referral page we captured in October 2026 keeps the referral in a browser cookie for 24 hours — an implementation detail, not a promise in the terms — so “same browser, same sitting” is the safe advice to give anyone you refer.

The friend ordered in another country

Your link works across countries: the code is the same, and only the country part of the address changes. But Tesla's terms don't address a referrer in one country and a buyer in another. The UK terms describe referrer benefits as Supercharging credits or Tesla Credits; the US terms as Tesla Credits. If your friend ordered abroad, ask Tesla how it treats the referral, and expect the answer to depend on both registration addresses.

What to ask Tesla, with what proof

  • The month and year your friend placed the order, and their delivery date if they've had it.
  • Confirmation from your friend that they opened your link before ordering — ideally their screenshot of your referral page with the heading and their car's card.
  • Your count of referrals this calendar year.
  • Your registration state or country, and the country your friend ordered in.
  • Whether you still have a qualifying product on your account.

Ask through the Tesla app or your usual Tesla contact. Be specific and brief. Tesla's terms say the program will be run “fair and reasonable,” and also that “if you disagree with us, it will be your responsibility to show us that you have not violated any Tesla policies or these Terms and Conditions.” Evidence beats insistence.

Note

Don't ask your friend for their order number to send to Tesla yourself. Their order is their account. Ask them to check their own order page for a referral line, and send Tesla what's yours.

Once the reward does arrive, the clock starts: “Each referrer benefit expires 12 months after the Grant Date,” and Tesla emails you 30 days before Tesla Credits expire. The amount isn't in Tesla's public terms — it's shown in your Tesla app.
