Does financing or leasing change a Tesla referral?
The referral page mixes two kinds of line on one card. Only one of them is the referral — and Tesla's terms only ever talk about buying.
Short answer
How you pay isn't mentioned in Tesla's referral terms, so cash, Tesla financing and your own bank loan all read the same: the buyer “must purchase a qualifying Tesla product through a friend's referral link.” The APR lines on the referral page are Tesla's finance offers, not part of the referral. Leasing is the open question — the terms say “purchase” and never “lease”, so ask Tesla before you sign.
The lines on the card that aren't the referral
Open a US referral page and each car card carries two lines under the model name. On Oct 3, 2026, the Model Y card read “3 mo. Full Self-Driving (Supervised)” and, below it, “1.99% APR Available”. Model 3 showed the same pair. Only the first line is the referral benefit. The second is a Tesla financing offer — the kind that appears on Tesla's site with or without anyone's link, and changes on its own schedule.
Text version of this diagram
The Model Y card on Tesla's US referral page, Oct 3, 2026, showed two lines. First: “3 mo. Full Self-Driving (Supervised)” — the referral benefit. Second: “1.99% APR Available” — a Tesla finance offer, not part of the referral and not a promise of any rate today.
What the cards showed, dated
The finance lines have changed more often than the referral benefit. These are records of what Tesla's US referral page displayed on the capture date — not offers you can count on now.
| Capture date | Finance line shown | Referral benefit on the same cards |
|---|---|---|
| Dec 1, 2025 | Cybertruck card: a lease line, “from $729/mo” | Model 3 / Model Y: 3 months FSD (Supervised), or $500 off with an FSD purchase; Cybertruck: $1,000 off |
| Mar 1, 2026 | “0% APR Available” (Model Y), “0.99% APR Available” (Model 3), “3.99% APR Available” (Model S, Model X) | Model 3 / Model Y: 3 months FSD (Supervised) |
| Oct 3, 2026 | “1.99% APR Available” (Model 3, Model Y) | Model 3 / Model Y / Cybertruck: 3 months FSD (Supervised) |
Two lessons from that table. The finance line and the referral line move independently. And neither tells you the rate you'd be approved for — that depends on Tesla's lending partners and on you. Whatever rate you see today is set outside the referral program; check Tesla's own financing page when you order.
Cash vs Tesla financing vs your own loan
Tesla's referral terms never mention how you pay. The buyer condition is: purchase a qualifying product through a friend's link, as someone who has never owned one. That reads the same whether the money comes from your savings, from financing arranged through Tesla at checkout, or from a loan from your own bank or credit union.
| How you pay | What Tesla's terms say | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cash / bank transfer | Nothing about payment method | The plain case Tesla's wording describes: you purchase |
| Financing through Tesla at checkout | Nothing about payment method | You're still the purchaser; the finance offer is separate from the referral |
| Your own bank or credit-union loan | Nothing about payment method | Same — you purchase from Tesla, the lender pays |
| Lease from Tesla | The terms say “purchase”, never “lease” | Not addressed. Ask Tesla before signing |
| Lease through a third-party company | Not addressed | Ask who the purchaser is on Tesla's order |
One thing does connect payment to the referral: the account. “Only primary account holders can redeem benefits,” so the buyer benefit lands on the Tesla Account that placed the order, whoever is paying for the car.
Leasing: the terms say “purchase”
Every buyer sentence in Tesla's US and UK terms uses “purchase”: “you must purchase a qualifying Tesla product through a friend's referral link”, “buyer benefits are only available when purchasing your first qualifying Tesla product”. The word “lease” doesn't appear anywhere in either set of terms. Tesla's terms don't say leases are excluded — but they don't say leases are included either.
A lease line on a referral card, like the Cybertruck one in December 2025, isn't evidence either way. It's a finance line on the same card, like an APR line. Ask Tesla, in writing, before you sign a lease.
Watch out
A lease raises a second question later: when you hand the car back, have you “owned a qualifying Tesla product”? Tesla's terms don't define owning for leases. If you lease now and plan to buy later, that affects whether a future order counts as your first. See who counts as a first-time buyer.
Leasing through a third-party company
If a leasing or fleet company buys the car from Tesla and leases it to you, the purchaser on Tesla's side may be the company, not you. Tesla's terms don't address business or fleet purchases at all. The referral is opened in a browser and attached to an order on a Tesla Account; if the company places the order, it isn't your order. Ask the leasing company and Tesla how the order will be placed before you rely on a buyer benefit.
Does the referral show in your finance paperwork?
Tesla's terms don't say. In the US, the benefit on Oct 3, 2026 was 3 months of Full Self-Driving (Supervised) — a feature trial, not money off the price — so there's no reason to expect it to change a loan amount. Your finance agreement covers the price and the loan; the referral is something Tesla applies to your order and account. Read the order summary for the referral, not the loan paperwork.
What to ask Tesla before signing a lease
Ask whether a buyer benefit applies to a lease.
Something like: “I opened a referral link before configuring. If I lease rather than buy, will the buyer benefit apply to my order?”
Ask who the purchaser is.
Tesla, a bank, or a leasing company. If it isn't you on your Tesla Account, the referral may not reach you.
Ask how a lease counts later.
Whether, when you buy a Tesla in future, this lease will count as having owned one.
Keep the written replies.
Tesla's terms put the burden on you to show you followed them if there's a disagreement.
One check that covers it
Whatever you pay with, look at the order summary before you pay. If it mentions the referral or the benefit, that's the line that matters. If it doesn't, ask Tesla before you place the order — “referral links cannot be applied after you place your order,” and no finance arrangement changes that.
